Supersuckers & Lydia Loveless
Thursday, May 23, 2013 | $13 advance $15 door | Tickets available Bop City, the Waverley Hotel or by phone (250) 336-8322. | Doors at 9:00pm
The Supersuckers are literally a human cartoon. They all grew up among the dead-ends and cactus needles of Tucson, Arizona and have known each other since grade school. They graduated from the same high school together at the same time (a school immortalized in the song “Santa Rita High”) and chose to play in a band together because they liked to hang out together, not because they were great musicians or anything.
The Supersuckers have always toured their asses off all over the world and that has never stopped. They hit the road with bands like Mudhoney, Social Distortion, Bad Religion, The Ramones, Motorhead, The Toadies, The Butthole Surfers, The Reverend Horton Heat, The Dwarves, White Zombie and Pearl Jam. They’ve played a few Farm Aid shows and backed Willie Nelson on The Tonight Show. Their music has appeared in T.V. shows (Beverly Hills 90210, Viva La Bam, Simple Life, Road Rules Challenge, Real World, all that crap), Movies (Baseketball, Hype) and commercials (Mountain Dew) as well as countless snow and skateboarding video compilations.
2003 unleashed the impeccably titled, Motherfuckers Be Trippin’ on the world. It was the perfect follow up to The Evil Powers Of Rock N Roll, it spent a couple weeks on the Billboard Independent Charts and songs from it have been featured on MTV’s Real World and Viva La Bam shows as well as countless ski and snowboard videos. Even managed to work a single (Rock N Records Ain’t Selling this Year) to radio where it was #1 on the RnR Specialty Charts for 4 weeks in a row (whatever that is).
"Get It Together" was the next brand-spanking new record from the Supersuckers. Once again teaming up with the man who brought "Paid" to life, the incomparable Mr. Billy Joe Bowers, the band has never sounded so good.
With special guest Lydia Loveless. Blessed with a commanding, blast-it-to-the-back-of-the-room voice, the 21 year-old Lydia Loveless was raised on a family farm in Coshocton, Ohio—a small weird town with nothing to do but make music. With a dad who owned a country music bar, Loveless often woke up with a house full of touring musicians scattered on couches and floors. When she got older, in the time-honored traditions of teenage rebellion, she turned her back on these roots, moved to the city (Columbus OH) and immersed herself in the punk scene, soaking up the musical and attitudinal influences of everyone from Charles Bukowski to Richard Hell to Hank III.
Loveless’s true-to-life testimonials hit and hit hard. Be it whiskey, men, god or alienation, Lydia takes them all on; they may kick, but she kicks back and, even though she stands 5′ tall, when the bar stools start flying, we want her on our side. Click here to view a video "Can't Change Me".
The Brains
Saturday, May 18, 2013 | $12 advance | tickets available at Bop City , The Waverley and by phone 250 336 8322
The Brains has never been a band to follow the rules…in fact they’ve made it a point to utterly and completely destroy every single one of them with each album they release and every show they play. These hardworking road-warriors have brought their eye-popping live show to the four corners of the world; playing packed houses throughout Europe, Canada and the US alongside acts like Mad Sin, The Offspring, The Reverend Horton Heat, The Real McKenzies, The Creepshow and many more. A relentless tour schedule is in the works for 2013 that includes stops at CMW, PouzzaFest and The Pineda Psychobilly Meeting in Spain.
The Monster Within is an unholy collection of 14 mind-bendingly brain-melting tracks that will explode in your earholes like a hell-born volcano. The impossibly fast and unbelievably tight rhythm section of Pat Kadaver (skins) and Colin The Dead (stand up bass) threaten to push the limits of sanity and safety to the very edge… Rene D La Muerte’s (vox/gretsch) haunting croon sends shivers up the spines of even the most jaded listener while his signature guitar stylings fuse the rockabilly sounds of the 50’s with the intensity of an industrial chainsaw. The Brains continue to blur the lines between rockabilly, psycho, surf, punk and rock n’ roll; kicking down genre barriers and demanding undying loyalty at every show they play. Incorporating elements from whatever the hell they feel like, The Brains concoct an irresistable brew of Motorhead-esque ferocity and sexed up latin swagger while adding a pinch of rockabilly revival and a whole lot of booze-fueled punk rock mayhem.

With a catalogue that is unmatched by many, Moka Only is often considered to be a pioneer and driving force behind Canadian West Coast hip hop, as well as an important component in popularizing the art of freestyling in Victoria and Vancouver. In the 13+ years since his debut, Moka Only has released more than 50 albums, both solo and collaborative. He records under a variety of aliases, with the most popular being Ron Contour, Flow Torch and The Durable Mammal. He has been a contributing member of numerous groups and collectives, including Perfect Strangers, Code Name: Scorpion, Cryptic Souls Crew, The Dominant Mammals, City Planners, Nowfolk and Swollen Members, along with many others. Amongst all of that, Moka has worked with underground hip hop heroes like J Dilla, Aceyalone, OH NO, MF Doom, Buck 65, K-Os, Sixtoo and more.
But it all began rather humbly in his hometown of Victoria, BC, where Moka Only discovered hip hop culture at an early age, starting out as a graffiti artist before switching to rhyming at house parties and freestyling anywhere and everywhere alongside partner K-Prevail (recording together as Splitsphere). In 1994, Moka made the move to San Diego in order to further his rap career, creating a number of connections that he would later use to his advantage. Upon moving back to Canada in 1995 and taking up residence in Vancouver, Moka met Mad Child, and along with K-Prevail, now just Prevail, the three emcees founded Swollen Members one night at a Denny's, with Moka coining their multiple meaning name. However, a group dynamic was not for Moka and he soon moved on to a solo career.
With his solo career as both rapper and producer on the rise, Moka Only participated in a few collaborations with Swollen Members resulting in Moka rejoining the group for Monsters in the Closet, their 2002 collection of b-sides and rarities featuring three new songs. He remained on board for Heavy in 2003 but left again prior to the recording of Black Magic. Once again Moka had found himself confined as part of a group.
His time with Swollen Members, which also saw him signed to the Battle Axe label, resulted in three consecutive Junos, but it also meant a decrease in the amount of solo music from Moka. "The Most Prolific" returned in 2005 beginning with the release of The Desired Effect, his Nettwerk debut that realized a much greater pop potential for Moka. Unhappy with the label interference, Moka released a Japan-only alternate version under the title Dirty Jazz that was more to his liking, marking Moka's return to releasing the nearly seasonal albums of gritty, underground jams he has always been known for through labels like Camobear, Legendary Entertainment and Urbnet, as well as an occasional one-off project for various other indie labels.
With special guest Comox Valley's own Ill Tone. On February 26, 2013, Ill Tone finally released his debut album, “Bringin’ the Hope Back”. The album was released on URBNET Records and features some of Canada’s best vocalists, including Juno nominees Jasmin Parkin of ‘Mother Mother’, and Kyprios (formerly of ‘Sweatshop Union’). Also featured on the album is Skryptcha, a talented Australian MC from Australia’s ‘Obese Records’. Within a few weeks of being released, the album pulled within the top 5 hip hop releases in Canada on !earshot (national community / campus radio charts). In addition to being spun on dozens of community and campus station’s across the nation, “Bringin’ the Hope Back” was placed in to rotation by CBC Radio and also gained praise and coverage from media outlets on a national scale. With special guest Skulastic. Musician, MC, Lyricist, Song Writer, Beat Maker, Producer, Entrepreneur, Entertainer, Performer, Goddess of Knowledge, Survivor and basically Reppin for all the Underdogs and Nerds all over the world! Click here for a video.

Goth girls to survivalists, bovines to bibles, antique pistols to vintage motorcycles: Alberta-born honky-tonker Corb Lund’s songcraft covers it all. From a rustic retreat deep in the Rocky Mountain forest, Cabin Fever, Lund’s enthralling new album, evolved from a period of introspection and hard traveling. Just like the prolific Lund’s subjects run the gamut, so do the sonics on the live-sounding long-player, ranging from rockabilly to Western swing, cowboy balladry to country-rock. And, of course, the occasional yodel…
Cabin Fever follows on the boot heels of Lund’s 2009 New West debut, the critically acclaimed Losin’ Lately Gambler, his sixth album. Backed by his longtime band, The Hurtin’ Albertans, the JUNO Award recipient has won kudos in his native land; the Canadian Country Music Association has named Lund Roots Artist of the Year 7 consecutive years from 2004 - 2010.
With a dozen ass-kicking songs under his belt, Corb plans to take the show on the road, just as he’s done for the past two decades; he cut his teeth in the ‘90s as a member of Canadian speed-metal band, the Smalls. The DIY spirit lives with Lund, who traded his ax for an acoustic and has done everything from printing his band’s T-shirts to booking gigs to writing press releases. Though it may look like a quartet onstage, the Hurtin’ Albertans are really "a seven-piece band," according to Lund, "because Grant plays a bunch of stuff," including mandolin, banjo, Dobro, and baritone guitar. "Grant and I have a complex system of hand signals because I don’t use a set list," says Lund. "We’ve got seven records’ worth of material now, so every show is different. I find it more interesting that way."
Corb began his momentous rise to popularity in the Valley at the Waverley years ago so we are thrilled that he has agreed to grace our stage again.
Joining Corb on this tour is Ridley Bent. Ridley also supported Corb when he headlined the Big Time Out in 2007. Like Ridley Bent's past records, Rabbit On My Wheel reads like a collection of short stories, showcasing the Western Canada based Country artist's keen fascination for characters whose life on the straight and narrow rarely lasts past the nearest exit to a short, crooked road. With a second summer of festival performances under their belt - this time travelling around in a 1986 camper van - Fiftieth Parallel again hit the studio recording their new CD 'Open Sky'. Playing almost entirely original material, Fiftieth Parallel have been forming their own unique style of progressive acoustic music: drawing inspiration from artists such as John Butler and the late Michael Hedges, infusing it with the contagious West Coast vibe. Despite being only a duo -- Phil Marchand (acoustic guitar), Jonathan Hinds (acoustic guitar and percussion) -- Fiftieth Parallel have made a name for themselves with their big natural sound.
