The Funk Hunters
Saturday, December 3, 2011 | $12 advance $15 door | Tickets available at Bop City, the Waverley Hotel or by phone (250) 336-8322. | Doors at 9:30pm
In just a few short years, The Funk Hunters have built an international following, releasing music on labels around the globe and showcasing their signature high-energy DJ sets at some of the world's most popular music festivals and clubs. Dunks & The Outlier first teamed up because of a mutual love for "hunting" good music, and today, this passion still rings true as they continue to champion the simple but often lost idea that the music itself comes first, regardless of attachments to genre. Their name is now in high demand, receiving bookings, accolades, and remix requests from all corners of the electronic music scene.
Armed with 4-turntables and the unique ability to create live mashups and remixes, their DJ sets standout. Seamlessly blending original productions with everything from HipHop to Funk, Disco to House, Dubstep to DnB, and everything in between, they create original sets never replicated. It's not uncommon to find this duo headlining an all bass music festival one night and then performing a funk and boogie set the next. They've toured across Canada multiple times, played to crowds of thousands at renowned festivals such as the Shambhala Music Festival and the Telus World Ski & Snowboard Festival, and have been invited to share the stage with musical pioneers like Z-Trip, RJD2, and Cut Chemist. In 2010, they completed their first month-long international tour, playing shows across the country of Brazil.
On the production front, their original music and remixes have been played around the world in clubs and on radio-stations alike. Signed to True Movement, Ghetto Funk, Fort Knox Recordings, Manmade Records, Homebreakin Records, and Swing Set Sounds, their releases prove again that their musical taste and influence spans all genres. They also co-own True Movement, a heavy hitting west-coast music label representing a diverse catalog of glitch hop, dubstep, and future bass producers, while still maintaining close partnerships with labels like Homebreakin (CA) and Goodgroove (UK) to produce their own acclaimed events that bring international talent to Canada.
With special guest JPrime.
JPrime is a breaks/hiphop/scratch DJ from Vancouver Island, and has been on the turntables for 12 years now. He began with a love for old skool hip hop, funk, and turntablism inspired by such DJ’s as Q-Bert, Babu, Cut Chemist, and DJ Shadow. My sound reflects that today as I lace breakbeats with dashes of scratch flavour and hip hop.

Movember featuring Tin Town...
Tin Town brings together an eclectic group of musicians and talents tin_town_rocks
to create an unmistakeable sound and a plurality of styles and grooves.
Under the canopy of the Beaufort Mountain Range, Tin Town is based in Tin Town,
Courtenay, British Columbia, Canada
Schizophonic is an upbeat dance band that promises a motherf*nking good time with nonstop grooves. Their beats range from pure funk as it was laid down by the masters Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, and Parliment Funkadelic to straight up danceable ska. Influenced by bands such as Chicago as well, Schizophonic incorporates the rock sound into the mix to produce a unique experience. With an ultra-tight rhythm section and powerhouse horns, they are pumped to deliver a memorable and danceable night.
Schizophonic came together in September of 2010 and is based out of Nanaimo, BC. The band is made up of musicians from across the country that have made their way to the west coast to study and play music. Originally playing more experimental compositions and covers bordering on jazz/funk fusion, Schizophonic gradually refined their repertoire over the past year down to a more basic, funk rock sound. After playing only a few shows, Schizophonic established themselves as one of Nanaimo’s premiere up and coming bands.

Sunday, November 20, 2011 | $10 Cover | Doors at 9:30pm
E.S.L. performs uniquely orchestrated songs inspired by everything from polish cabaret to Neil Young to the Beastie Boys and Velvet underground, to name a few. Their chemistry translates into magical live performances that range from roaring prohabition era dance numbers to heartbreaking ballads. The Vancouver-based group was formed in 2005 when Marta Jaciubek-McKeever (Polish-born pianist and singer of Girl Nobody fame) and Cris Derksen found musical kinship in each other. Joy Mullen joined on drums (The People Verses) soon after. Tess Kitchen recently joined the group and plays trumpet.
From the start, Cree/Métis artist Christa Couture established herself as a songwriter with sharp-shooting wit, effortless grace and heart-on-sleeve intensity. Her “gorgeously intimate voice [is] somewhere between the tough vulnerability of Amy Rigby and the passionate, sophisticated folk of Joni Mitchell” (Pop Matters) and her work explores intimate spaces with a frank confidence that avoids cliché and melodrama. Her sophomore album The Wedding Singer and The Undertaker hit the Top 10 on CBC Radio 3 and won “Best Folk Acoustic Album” from the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards (2008). Couture is constantly writing and creating and often on tour across Canada.
A rising star on the Canadian classical/jazz/folk/pop/ electronica/what have you scenes, cellist Cris Derksen is known for captivating solo performances building layers of sound into often surprisingly slamming dance music. On her debut solo effort, the 13 tracks range from classically oriented, multi-tracked soundscapes ("We Danced Movement I & II") to upbeat party bumps inspired by her half-Cree ancestry ("Pow wow wow") and hybridized pieces that sound readymade for climatic moments in art or cinema. As a side player Cris has performed with hip hop star Kanye West, Veda Hille, Tanya Tagaq, Kinnie Starr, Lightening Dust (Black Mountain), Rae Spoon, Leela Gilday and Ivan e Coyote.
e.s.l. is a fusion of players who could each claim top billing anywhere else. But there’s no room for egos here. Instead, we get an incomparable band that includes Polish-born pianist and singer Marta Jacubek-McKeever (Girl Nobody); noted Cree cellist Cris Derksen; fiddler Diona Davies (Po’Girl, Carolyn Mark, Be Good Tanyas) and drummer Joy Mullen (The People Verses, The Doers, Greg MacPherson). Separately, their credentials are impressive, together, they’re divine.
‘eye contact’ is the stirring debut CD from Vancouver’s e.s.l. – one of those magic projects conceived in the musical chemistry among firstclass artists. A wealth of chops and inspiration come together here, bringing ideas from all over and bending them into an album that ranges across the emotional map. From lavish to swinging, the songs are a gypsy blend that is at times playful and at others heartrending.
Zandhunga
Saturday, November 19, 2011 | $10 Cover | Doors at 9:30pm
Zandhunga A multi-national phenomenon, Zandhunga is the seed that sprouted West Coast Canada's premiere Latin Dance ensemble, Luzna Orchestra. Specializing in flavour-intensive, dance-demanding Salsa, Cumbia, and other Latino styles, Zandhunga is a versatile and far-reaching collective uniting musicians and dancers hailing from Vancouver Island, Canada, Mexico City and Xalapa, Mexico. With searing-hot sax solos, fleshed out by heart-felt and richly exotic vocals over a bed of Afro-Latin rhythms, montunos and tumbaos, Zandhunga delivers fiesta. Cuban bata drums, congas, cowbells, fretless bass and piano are employed in this authentically Latin rhythm section whose purpose is purely to propel bodies to move on the dance floor. Past performances include headlining Mexico's Jazz festival in Mazunte, and the CV Latin-Caribbean Festival as well as numerous sold-out nights in Joe's Garage, Canada. In addition to presenting original material, Zandhunga's performances tribute great legends of Latin music such as, Celia Cruz and the Fania All-Stars, Ismael Rivera, Willie Colon and many others.
Head of the Herd
Friday, November 18, 2011 | $12 advance | Tickets available at Bop City, the Waverley Hotel or by phone (250) 336-8322. | Doors at 9:30pm
The art of telling stories, of expressing emotion, of speaking with rhythm and register, has been a need of humanity since the very beginning. Without storytelling we have silence. Head of the Herd is opposite that silence – the music and sound of our lives.
NEU-A multi-instrumentalist with a chilling voice, Neu’s sound paradoxically warms the soul and pulls you into the story. He is energetic and passionate, and through Head of the Herd’s distinct lyrics, you can feel his emotion in every song. Neu takes the structure of traditional blues and adds a modern flavour; Rock sensibility, haunting vocals and, now and again, a throat splitting scream.
CLAY-First and foremost a ‘wordsman’, Clay couples lyricism with an innate ability to write boot stomping, bar shaking guitar riffs that make him a dynamic and accomplished songwriter. If Head of the Herd is a musical storm then Clay is the silent lightning bolt to Neu’s screaming thunder. You will hear his smooth yet gravel coated throat singing balancing out Neu’s possessed wail.

Elliott BROOD
Monday, November 7, 2011 | $15 advance $20 at the door | Bop City Records, The Waverley & by phone 250 336 8322-- | Doors @ 9:30 pm
With special guest Luke Blu Guthrie.
Elliott BROOD have always been time travellers. The Toronto trio writes songs steeped in history that feel very present. They've done their share of actual travelling, too, these musical troubadours, acoustic guitars and banjos slung over their sharp suits as they barnstormed across Canada and beyond. For the new album Days Into Years it was century-old stories encountered an ocean away that brought them closest to home. On the band's first European tour back in 2007 they found themselves driving through the backroads of France. Vocalist Mark Sasso, guitarist Casey Laforet and drummer Stephen Pitkin, all enthusiasts of military history, raised on the harrowing stories of Canadians in World War 1, were simply looking to avoid the toll highways. Then they came upon a sign for a WW1 military cemetery.
"We'd been driving through Belgium and France, always passing by these historical war places and we decided to pull over and take this one in," recalls Mark. "We saw all these Canadian names, and it really resonated with us, these young guys that had gone off to war. I knew all about it from reading books, but when you actually visit a place where the battles were, it hits you a lot harder. We said, 'We need to write a record about it.'" Days Into Years is Elliott BROOD's third full-length recording, the follow-up to 2008's Polaris Prize short-listed Mountain Meadows. Like its predecessors, including the 2004 debut EP Tin Type and 2006's Juno-nominated Ambassador, it mines real history to connect songs that are deeply personal in a cinematic, narrative way. Unfolding like a series of movie scenes, it looks to the future by starting with the past. Opening track "Lindsay" invites you into process of revisiting one's life while cleaning out an old family home. "If I Get Old" daydreams of making it through difficult times, be they in the trenches or a sickbed, and finding a nice place in the country to live out one's final moments. Days Into Years presents these reflections as a celebration of life, particularly on the perfect summer single "Northern Air", a love letter both to the rural Ontario landscape and the memory of a departed friend whose spirit now resides there.
Recorded with co-producer John Critchley at Green Door Studios in Toronto and Avening Town Hall (a former army barracks) in rural Ontario, the album showcases a more amped up Elliott BROOD that will put the knell to the "death country" tag that described their early work. Now, the roof-raising rhythm stomp and mandolin collides with luscious harmonies, piano and, for the first time, electric guitar in a mix Casey admits is "loud, heavy and rock 'n' roll." Since forming in 2002, Elliot BROOD has become a Canadian music institution. (The 2004 campus radio hit "Oh, Alberta!" remains a national treasure.) But after touring with acts like Wilco, Blue Rodeo, Corb Lund and the Sadies, playing festivals across North America, Europe and Australia and scoring the 2010 film Grown-Up Movie Star (for which they earned a Gemini nomination for Best Original Song), the band now also has a global presence. With Days Into Years they will bring their music, and of one of the greatest Canadian stories, to the world. Elliott BROOD are Casey Laforet (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass pedals, bass guitar, mandolin, banjo, lap steel, vocals) Mark Sasso (banjo, guitar, harmonica, vocals) and Stephen Pitkin (percussion, drums, piano, vocals).
The Boom Booms
Saturday, November 5, 2011 | $12 advance $15 door | Tickets available at Bop City, the Waverley or by phone (250) 336-8322. | Doors at 9:30pm
The Boom Booms are a six-piece Latin-soul-funk-rock-reggae band, forged from friendships born on the school yards, soccer fields, cafe patios and eventually bars of East Vancouver.
They make music that makes people want to dance — or “Get up and love somebody,” as lead singer and guitarist Aaron Nazrul calls it. Whether breaking into song and dance on the streets of Paris, storming stages with Congolese musicians in Brussels, playing to thousands at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival or serenading abuelitas in South America, the charming sextet is able to reach across cultural barriers and connect with people of all stripes, on levels equally rhythmic and emotional.
The video for their 2007 feel-good party anthem “When the Night” made it to #6 on the Much More Music countdown in 2008, and was optioned for a recent episode of 90210. “Delivered”, a surreal banjo ballad that conjures up images of a jungle river baptism, earned them the award for Best Roots Song at the Just Plain Folks Music Awards, which are judged by the world’s largest independent music organization.
The talented lineup is: Aaron Ross on vocals and latin-friendly nylon guitar, Geordie Hart on stand-up, sit-down and strap-on bass, Sean Ross on vocals + ukulele/cavacino, Tom Van Deursen on black, sexy electric guitar, Theo Vincent on ragin’ percussion + drumkit, and Richard Brinkman on drums that he keeps deep in his pocket.
Founding members Aaron Ross and Geordie Hart are lifelong friends who formed their first band in fifth grade. They discovered their mutual passion for Latin music and culture during a musical odyssey they embarked upon through Cuba and Mexico as 20-year-olds — so much so that many of Ross’ viscerally poetic lyrics are written and sung in Spanish. Recently, African influences have begun to make their way into the Boom Booms’ groovy stew.
The group’s magnanimous influences include the Buena Vista Social Club, Gregory Isaacs, The Budos Band, Manu Chao, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Damian Marley, Otis Redding, Sam Cook, Marvin Gaye, Ray LaMontagne, Tabu ley Rochereau and Paul Simon.
If you love em, help them win the 100.5 Peak Perfomance project, to win $100k!

Wil & C.R. Avery
Friday, November 4, 2011 | $12 advance | Tickets available at Bop City, the Waverley or by phone 250-336-8322. | Doors at 9:30pm
Wil was born to parents who were both musically proficient. On Friday nights he would sit and listen while his parents played and sung along to the old crooners and guitar legends such as Johnny Cash, Chet Atkins and Hank Williams.
Wil spent the winter of 2009 at home on Vancouver Island writing the songs for the 2010 release, “In This Together”. Wil admits “I loves writing about the darker things in life-songs about “baskets of kittens” don’t interest me” he says. Life is about hardship and beauty all at once and I like to explore these topics in my songs.
After touring the album Wil went home and spent the fall and winter writing songs for a new album as well as honing his talent for creating music for film. The result comes by way of a new album titled “Heart of Mine” as well as landing a host of commercial work in both Canada and USA.
Wil is and will remain, the consummate touring musician, developing his expansive roots-rock sound and world-weary lyricism while building a dedicated following for his famously intense live shows.
Heart of Mine contains 9 tracks written entirely by Wil then recorded/produced in a small Victoria studio with the help of his drummer, producer/engineer, Jason Cook. Those who have heard it feel it is his best work to date, honest and raw; if one were to label it, roots/rock or indie roots; this is a studio album yet it manages to defiantly capture the energy of Wils famous live performances.
Wil is and will remain, the consummate touring musician, developing his expansive roots-rock sound and world-weary lyricism while building a dedicated following for his famously intense live shows. Wil has always preferred to play live either solo or with "just a drummer". He says that freedom allows him to immerse himself onstage utterly and completely. One such performance was written up by the Calgary Sun as having so much "power and soul it could stop your heart."
C.R. Avery
Whether performing to thousands at the Royal Albert Hall or the lucky few who made it inside the packed past capacity speakeasy, C.R. Avery is a unique, raw and dynamic performer. His genius lies in many genres - blues, hip-hop, spoken word and rock & roll. He is a one-man band, but one for this generation; with the rare ability to sing poetic verse while beatboxing simultaneously while pounding the piano and adding harmonica like a plot twist. A multi-talented front man for his Legal Tender String Quartet; a crazed lead singer/harp player for his rock & roll band The Special Interest Group; a lyrical dynamo & the musical backbone of the spoken word trio Tons of Fun University.
Whether playing in front of thousands on the folk festivel circut or in a small cafe in Berlin or Edinburgh, C.R. Avery is a unique and electrifying performer. He simultaneously beatboxes, sings, plays harmonica and a Herbie Hancock 80s style red rocket keytar. Having drawn from a well of influences, C.R. is to hip-hop what Jimmy Reed was to Chicago blues; a one man traveling troubadour - but he is one for these modern times.
C.R.'s lyrical skills and vocal delivery have brought him to the forefront of the international spoken word scene. He is a past winner of the CBC national Poetry Face-Off. Scratchy, smoky, beaten by years of cigarettes and off-mike shouting in cabarets all over the world, C.R. Avery's voice is instantly identifiable.
C.R's lyrics come from his slam poetry pieces, honed by the merciless, sudden death, one-victor-and-all- others-cast-aside competitive nature of the slam world. As such, having been performed in front of an audience that demands both intellectual clarity and visceral honesty, competing against the very best work of the very best poets, his pieces are crafted to a necessary perfection.

Gaudi's innovative approach to live performance and versatility as a producer has kept him at the forefront of his field throughout a notable and prolific career. His music is stylistically hard to pin down as he is an artist in constant evolution. His musical exploration, over the last 30 years in the industry, has however seen him foray into punk, new wave, dub and reggae, world, experimental electronica and 'stuff that rocks dancefloors'.. he has however got deep roots, which run like a vein throughout his music, and they are in the big basslines and spacious soundscapes of dub and the anarchic sonic potential of the world of electronic music… where anything's possible.
He's a full time internationally touring solo artist, a studio producer in demand and a respected musical innovator. He's had chart hits, gold discs and awards & nominations for his work; he has released 12 solo albums, has more than 250 productions and 90 remixes to his name and his tracks feature on more than 120 compilations... There is however no resting on laurels for this London-based, international bass man.
Pleena, formerly DJP...
Born Paulina Maj in Kielce, Poland, Pleena immigrated to Canada in 1990. Having lived in Toronto, Canada's music hub, most of her life, Pleena developed an eclectic and sharp ear for music. With the support of partner Brett Ferdinandi (Tetragrammaton/Tetra G) and close friend vig schulman, her move to Cumberland proved to be a fearless journey into heavy-hitting beat dropping and genre-bending live remixes, resulting in endearingly wild dance-a-thons, like the legendary Electric Friendz parties- a group which Pleena co-founded. Pleena's wide range of musical tastes are often tailored towards accentuating the awesomeness of the event in which she finds herself a part of. Whether it be bridging the gap in style between other artists of varied genre or delivering the hard-hitting discotheque goods, her rhythm has been described as “intelligent progression”. Pleena is currently collaborating with Tetra G (visual artist, producer) as 11:11- a journey in audio/visual cohesion- and the two are working away on original tracks to be showcased when perfected. Having shared the stage with the likes of Metric, Broken Social Scene, Wintergloves, Gaudi, Mother Mother, You Say Party, Racoons and Humans to name a few, Pleena is a compelling audio trip.

The Lincoln Foster Band
Saturday, October 8, 2011 | $7 Cover | Doors at 9:30pm
Lincoln Foster grew up in the prairies on a farm and always felt a close connection to Mother Earth. His parents were big fans of all of the early rock and roll greats. Lincoln was hooked by the age of 3.
After studying piano through the Royal Conservatory of Toronto he joined his first band at 19. He toured extensively for 3 years with the New Wave/Rock band Life on Earth as the keyboardist and vocalist and found himself settling in Vancouver. His next adventure was with the Jazz/Blues/Punk Funk band the Juice Monkeys. He learned a great deal about the music industry during these 6 years.
After a couple of years off, Lincoln spent some time writing and began another project called Giver with old friend and recording engineer Anthony “Fu” Valcic (Staind, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park). It was at this time however that he met his future wife and decided to settle down and raise a family.
Five years of laying low prompted a very real need to create and perform. He became acquainted with several musicians on Vancouver Island and began another project. After about a year and a half of working with different musicians, a line up of quality players was established. In this time several songs have received radio airplay and a live show became imminent. His music has been described as “catchy and thought provoking” and has been compared to sounding somewhere between U2 and early Radiohead.

Mad Professor
Friday, September 30, 2011 | $15 advance | Tickets available at Bop City, the Waverley Hotel or by phone 250-336-8322 | Doors at 9:30pm
On the content of his character, and by the results of his recordings, he is one of the sanest record producers.
The name Mad Professor was first given by friends at school, who were amazed by the experiments he carried out as a youth.
Having built a radio and telephone system at the age of 10 years, it was no surprise that his interest and subsequent career in electronics along with a love of Motown, Philadelphia International, Treasure Isle and music of all types propelled him onward.
The early Eighties, having built his own mixing desk, had launched Mad Professor along with the Ariwa Studio/ label from his front room in Thornton Heath. Early works include sessions with Ruts DC, Reggae Regulars, Merger, Jimmy Lindsay, Mikey Dread, Johnny Clarke and many more international artists.
DUB ME CRAZY, the first in a 12 part series of albums, was to become his beacon for the label. With an episode being issued every year, the titles all told a different story.
By the mid Nineties, Mad Professor’s profile increased to legendary status. After remixing Massive Attack’s second album, Protection. No Protection was instantly received by all corners of the globe, benefiting from Virgin / EMI international launch pad. Professor’s personal Dub tours were increased to be a major part of his schedule, along with further remixes which include: Clementine, Tracy Spencer, The Boom, Danny Red, Depeche Mode, Jamiroqui, Rancid, KLF, Beastie Boys, Cidade Negra, Perry Farrell (Jane’s Addiction) along with the Massive Attack dub extravaganza all benefiting from the Mad Professor touch.
By 2004 Mad Professor worked with Sly & Robbie at Ariwa, where the Taxi gang laid down their versions of Ariwa rhythms.
Over 100 rhythms were recorded. An album titled The Dub Revolutionarys was released by Sanctuary Records owned Trojan Label.
Fresh demand for the dub show has taken the Ariwa Sound to many far flung places. In 2003 Mad Professor was invited to play at the Greenpeace festival in Manáus, Brazil. Since then, Mad Professor has become an annual visitor to South America, Playing also Argentina, Chile, and Venezuela, Australia, New Zealand, Estonia, Portugal.
In 2005 the dub show played Seoul in Korea, driving several hundreds of fans crazy to the warbler sounds. Bangkok in Thailand in 2006 and Goa in India in 2007, courtesy of the Big Chill. the Mad Traveller also played Dakar, courtesy of the Senegalese govt. Mad Professor is also involved in the Back to Africa festival,
an annual celebration in the Gambia, committed to the positive movement of descendants of Africans, back to Africa.
Hollerado w/ Young Rival
Sunday, September 25, 2011 | $12 advance $15 door | Bop City, The Waverley and by phone 250 336 8322 | 9:30 PM
Hollerado is four friends that grew up on the same street in tiny Manotick, Ontario, Canada.
They've also become one of the most lovable groups on the planet thanks to insanely catchy and energetic guitar pop, boundless creativity and a relentless DIY approach.
Hollerado has also gained international recognition through tours of China and South America and has earned its stripes by gigging Jack White's The Dead Weather, Weezer, Fucked Up, The Black Lips, Girl Talk, Andrew W.K., Titus Andronicus and others.
Hollerado's songs combine the melody and energy of 90s Weezer and Supergrass with the irreverent wit of Stephen Malkmus and their shows that have been described as elementary school recess with beer and piatas and acid at a house party.
Their ground-breaking debut is jam-packed with crazy-catchy melodies, raging hooks and riffs that will stay with you forever. Record In A Bag is fun, infectious and an instant classic.
This show will rock out the Waverley so come early to check out Young Rival.
